Description
This critical illness typically occurs in patients who are already critically ill or who have suffered severe trauma. Widespread inflammation damages the alveolar-capillary membrane, allowing fluid to leak into the air spaces. The lungs become incredibly stiff, making independent breathing almost impossible.
