Description
The parasite invades the enterocytes of the small intestine, causing localized epithelial destruction and blunting of the villi. While it often causes a self-limiting diarrheal illness in healthy individuals, it can become chronic and life-threatening in those with compromised immune systems. It is particularly prevalent in tropical regions and among patients with advanced HIV infection.
